How to connect your PCs to your router?

Having said all the above; fortunately it is pretty straightforward to connect a few computers together to create a LAN (Local Area Network). There are three basic components:

  • Each computer will require an ethernet adaptor (aka NIC or Network Interface Card) or a wireless adaptor,
  • Each computer connects to the router via wireless or a Cat 5 (or better) UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) Ethernet cable, and
  • Each computer requires networking drivers (software). All versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 95 have the networking drivers built in to your computers Operating System.

After installing your networking hardware and installing the appropriate devise driver, you will see an entry for "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection". Right-click and select Properties. You may need to install the protocol "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"

The DrayTek Vigor routers include a DHCP server which is able to assign IP settings automatically, so in your computers TCP/IP settings choose the automatic options as shown here...
